Hipps Soft Body Popper Class

We hope your spring is off to a great start.  Before we know it, we'll be enjoying some great topwater action with some of our favorite gamefish, both coldwater and warmwater.  And with that, fishing poppers always comes to mind.

We wanted to make sure you knew about a great opportunity to take a fantastic class on tying our favorite popping bug, the Hipps Soft Body Popper, and taught by none other than the master himself, Anthony Hipps.  A good friend of mine for many years, Anthony ties and teaches his craft with a passion and will teach you how to tie what we feel is arguably one of the finest poppers ever created.

Anthony will be holding this class here in Greensboro on April 4 and 5, 2008.  Anthony will cover how to tie his amazing foam creations, from choosing the proper hooks, constructing a multi-piece body made of sheet foam, painting and finishing your bugs, adding tailing and a collar, and also rubber legs.  Anthony will supply a directions tying booklet, foam, hooks, paint, rubber legs, some tailing materials, and gloss finishes to give the bugs a finish coat.  There is no charge for the class, but a $10.00 voluntary materials fee would be greatly appreciated.  Currently, five spaces are taken and five spaces are left. This class is being held through the Nat Greene Fly Fishers  fly fishing club, Greensboro's fly fishing club.  Don't miss this great opportunity!

What to bring to the class

-fly tying vice and tying tools
-a sharp pair of scissors
-a bottle of super glue with brush applicator, such as Loc-Tite, or  Krazy Glue (available at WalMart, Lowes, or craft stores)
-a sharp, threadable sewing needle
-a bobbin with 6/0 or 3/0 tying thread
-if you have a rotary motor for curing epoxy flies, bring it to class as it will be useful for drying poppers as well.

For more information or questions please contact Anthony at 336 249-0338, or by email anthony.hipps@syngenta.com.

a_hipps_bio_1Anthony Hipps is a professional fly tying artist, instructor, and speaker who hails from Lexington, North Carolina. He has been tying flies for more than twenty years, specializing in deer hair bass flies, smallmouth bass nymphs, saltwater streamers, and soft-bodied foam poppers. In 2004 he was a featured tier of bonefish flies on the Outdoor Life Network's "Fly Fish TV Magazine." Anthony's current project is fleshing out the manuscript for a book on tying warmwater flies that will be published by the Lyon's Press.

Anthony is also active with the Federation of Fly Fishers Southeastern Council, serving on the Board of Directors and as the Council's Fly Tying Chairman for the past several years.

He enjoys fishing for smallmouth bass as well as other warmwater species. Two of his favorite "smallie" lures are the Soft-Bodied Popper and the HellCraw.
