2001 Annual Banquet

BOB CLOUSER

One of the most famous and effective fly patterns in the world is the Clouser Deep Minnow.   The Clouser Minnow has become the fly of choice for many fishermen because of its effectiveness with a wide range of species from the mountains to the coast. The fly is said to be the most effective under-water fly pattern developed in the last four decades.

Bob Clouser is equally famous, if not legendary, in the sport of fly fishing.  Clouser is also the innovator of many other fishing patterns, including the Clouser's Crayfish, Swimming Nymph, Crippled Minnow, Mad Tom, Darter Hellgrammite, E-Z Popper, Floating Minnow and many others.

Clouser specializes in guiding fly fishermen for smallmouth bass on Pennsylvania's Susquehanna River. But he was recently spotted along North Carolina's coast, partaking in our state's cornucopia of fall fishing. Such trips help provide the fodder for Clouser's other occupation as a freelance outdoor photographer and writer. He has written articles in many fly tying and flyfishing magazines. He also has been featured in many fly tying and flyfishing videos, some of which have been shown on television nationwide.

When not traveling in pursuit of fish, Clouser oversees the family business - Clouser's Fly Shop and Mail Order Business in Royalton, Pa. He also is on the fly fishing advisory staff for the St. Croix Rod Company.

Clouser is a supporter of catch-and-release fishing and has been presented many awards for his conservation work to enhance smallmouth bass fishing in Pennsylvania. His awards include induction into the National Fresh Water Fishing Hall of Fame as a legendary angler, the Warm Water Committee Achievement Award presented by the Federation of Fly Fishers, the Dr. James Henshall Award presented by the Federation of Fly Fishers, 1995 Conservation Award of the Year presented by Susquehanna Smallmouth Alliance and the Charles K. Fox 1997 Rising Trout Conservation Award presented by The Cumberland Valley Chapter of Trout Unlimited.

Thanks to all of you for making this years banquet something really hard to top. The name Bob Clouser is a real magnet. We had great attendance at the seminar, which was sold out, and also the banquet, many thanks to him.

The tying portion of the seminar was truly unique, partly because of the skill and expertise demonstrated, and partly due to some very entertaining stories Bob told about some of his experiences. For the first time in my recollection, after the demo, we broke into small groups with a table leader, tools and materials, so that folks could apply some of the techniques Bob showed us, and he could circulate and speak to individuals.

The weather was good to us and we were able to try some casting in the afternoon.

We are very grateful for the corporate sponsorship of The Flyline too. Their support and partnership was a great asset. The banquet was great fun - good prizes, excellent catering by the Lutz family, and another great presentation by Bob. Everyone participated to make it a most memorable event - Heather and her friend as the ticket takers, Harry and Mack manning the ca$h position, Lorraine providing the table decorations, Rock on the AV equipment, Mike Lehouck doing the prize presentation, Jim Brady's presentation to Mark Grunenwald, and all those others who helped put up and take down tables etc. and to those who quietly contributed and pitched in as needed! Preliminary reports indicate that we surpassed last years net income by $300.00. Job well done to all!
